Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Writer, Musician? I have many interests with just as many labels. For a time I considered it professional courtesy to separate my different interests into clear and distinct categories. It makes sense because society says that you’ve have to be good at one thing and that one thing is all that matters. I have a hard time believing that. I can point to several multi-talented people throughout history: Will Rogers, Woody Allen, Gerard Way. The creative mind never rests. Who knows what talent will strike a chord? It’s my goal to keep producing work that’s intellectually satisfying with the eventual hope that something I create catches on.

I started playing guitar around 1997 and desperately wanted to be in a band with a song on the radio. I accomplished that goal in 2002 when Magic 95.3 out of Lawton, Oklahoma played my song “Monticello” on their station as part of a song writers contest. I then set out to create my own comic book based on an idea I had in college called, “Straw Man”. I published the first issue in 2004 and have since published a total of 13 comic books. In 2007 I received a BFA in Graphic Design from Cameron university and that same year I was married to Larissa Smith of Evansville, IN. We moved to Evansville to be close to her family. In 2010 we welcomed the birth of our daughter, Ava. That same year I went back to school to learn HTML and CSS.

Now my goal is one of a singular purpose: Find a way to make my talents produce a viable living for my family. Nothing will stop me from meeting that goal. If you’re an employer or a patron of the arts who wants to help me reach this goal please send an email to strawmancomics @ gmail.com

David – pretty sure it was you who I had a very good conversation with at SPACE this year about the state of small pressing and what can be done to move forward. I am tarting to jell on some aspects of things, and am just wondering if you are still interested in being involved/helping develop some things.

      Hello David,

My name is Keith Hampton, I’m the editor/designer of ArtistsCreating Magazine. We are a bi-monthly FREE digital magazine online which is devoted to all things creative happening in southern Indiana. We’re on our 7th issue, have over 500 subscribers, over 120 creative people’s listings and are growing all the time. (At the bottom is a link). I got your name through a cartoonist that I found (Terence E. Hanley) online who said you might be interested in getting your work published. We accept submissions from all types of artists along with writing and other pursuits. However, the reason I’m contacting you is due to my massive, desperate need for a cartoonist. I’m not sure if you do 1-panel cartoons (in the style of New Yorker, etc) but I’d be willing at this point to take whatever ideas you have. Of course, we have zero budget (this entire enterprise is done out of my love of art and artists) but we also off FREE advertising to any artist or gallery who lists with us. So, while your work would be published and promoted, you could also advertise any upcoming shows you have to a pretty direct and succinct subscriber list.

Here is the link to see past issues: http://www.artistscreating.org where you can also subscribe and send us your tasty submissions.

Thank you for any interest and if you also know any other cartoonists, please pass along this information.
